Day of reckoning?
So I'm sitting behind my computer at school, watching my students lead their conferences with their parents. So far, so good. Only one complaint. My report card comments did not say enough positive things about a student. I ALWAYS begin my comments with positive comments, what the student is doing well, how he or she has improved, etc...But the "things to work on" section was lengthier for this particular student. And not undeservedly so. One parent seemed to take it all in stride. The other felt compelled to tell me over and over again that the emphasis was on the negative, felt it necessary to repeat the idea "yes but my point is..." To which I countered, every single time, I understand HOWEVER...the positive has not outweighed the negative recently...I did what I've been trained to do...Be firm, be polite, don't say anything you do not mean. Yay me!
I'm a bit nervous about two of the encounters I may have later...not sure I've done enough for the child, even though I am CONSTANTLY thinking about how the student is doing, what is being learned, are the resources adjusted accordingly, etc...I'm still nervous. Knowing that in a perfect world, this child would have my undivided attention and all of my energy would be focused on this child's learning needs. I'm hoping it will be a good eye opener "mise au point" for both parent and child, and that there won't be a long accusatory conversation. I'm hoping the time spent will truly be the child being able to show what they know how to do, that they will be able to rejoice in some successes.
Teaching is making me a nervous person. Ha ha. As if I wasn't one already...
So much to do...and not enough time or space or energy. I'm determined to get past the 3 year breaking point.
